Fourth of July

Mars rises in the darkened sky.
We lay on a hammock
watching the heavens burst
blue, red and white.
A star shoots
under the milky moonlight.
Fireworks, ooohs, and aaahs
echo the night.
The planet of war
gazes down on our nation
as we celebrate.
Flags waving dutifully
surrender to the wind.

Lisa C. Johnson: I am an attorney living in Wollaston, Massachusetts, who loves everything food related and driving my silver Volkswagen Beetle. This past year, I began pursuing my desire to become a freelance writer by sampling several local restaurants and submitting restaurant reviews that appear in the book Hungry?Boston. Also, I now write book reviews for the Massachusetts Bar Association Lawyers Journal. I have really enjoyed writing reviews. It has given me the confidence to try my luck submitting more personal work for publication. I started writing poetry when I was in high school, and have always written some here and there, but kept it private and close to my heart. Now I’m ready to start sharing. After all, what am I waiting for?
